Mechanical Design Engineer (District Energy)

SSE Enterprise Utility Solutions

Salary: up to circa £55,000 depending on skills and experience, plus excellent benefits and career opportunities

Location: London

SSE is a British FTSE 35 Company and is one of the largest and most diverse energy companies in the UK. Our business is powered by talented, enthusiastic people in a whole range of roles - supporting, co-ordinating and driving the business to meet our responsibilities and achieve our company goals.

Our Heat team within SSE Enterprise Utilities, designs, develops, delivers and manages distributed generation assets for SSE and for our customers. Working both in the design and build and ESCO markets, the Heat team provide a turn-key in-house design-develop solution and then brings in specialist construction sub-contractors, including SSE Contracting, our in-house M&E business, to deliver these projects.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer based in London to develop and design District Energy networks. A key part of the role is to carry out District heating and cooling system design and design review.

The specifications you devise for commercial and contractual purposes will be in line with BSRIA frameworks, or other applicable institutions and you will be required to produce design risk assessment reports focused on eliminating hazards and reducing risks in line with CDM 2015 Designed Roles and Responsibilities.

You will report to Lead Mechanical Design Engineer and engage with other teams in Project Delivery, Commercial, Assets and O&M in order to successfully deliver projects. You should have a good understanding of Energy Centre design and integration of different energy sources. You should have an excellent understanding on hydraulic system design, variable flow systems and Energy centre control. You should have an experience managing a supply chain for major plant and district energy elements such as boilers, CHPs, chillers, pumps, underground pipe and other.

You should be able to demonstrate experience of delivering district energy system design from feasibility to construction phase.

A Chartered Engineer, qualified to degree level in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, you should have relevant experience in mechanical services design for district heating and cooling networks and have a strong understanding of current Building Regulations. Experience of designing networks in compliance with EN 13941, a track record in delivering energy centres and heating/cooling networks to RIBA stage 4 requirements and experience with AutoCAD are essential.

A strong team player, you will have exceptional attention to detail with a flexible attitude to engineering solutions and have the ability to work under pressure and respond constructively to conflicting priorities.

This is an exciting role where you'll face plenty of challenges, but the rewards are as numerous as the opportunities. As one of the UK's largest and fastest growing energy companies, we take great pride in our work. So, if you want to work in an environment passionate about safety, innovation, teamwork and excellence in everything we do, you'll be proud to be part of the SSE family.

In return, we can offer you a competitive salary package in a position which has excellent routes for career progression within the SSE Group. You will also enjoy an attractive benefits package, including pension, share plans, a generous leave entitlement (with options to purchase additional leave), reductions on energy, phone and broadband bills, plus a host of other rewards and lifestyle benefits.

Closing date for applications is Friday 18th August 2017.
