Position: Associate Electrical Engineer

Location: Kent

A well-renowned, trusted and innovative consultancy I am working on behalf of, are currently requiring an Associate Electrical Engineer to play an integral role within their Building Services team. You will be able to draw on your prior experience and proven track record of success, individual technical excellence, creativity and ability to lead and develop project teams, in order to achieve the industry-leading standards required by both the consultancy itself and their clients.

Electrical Associate Role

  • Reporting to the Head of Design
  • Working closely with Mechanical equivalent

Job Purpose

  • To manage the electrical workload including work allocation and efficient delivery. To head up and manage project teams on allocated projects.
  • Carry out surveys, reports, design, specifications and site supervision of MEP services
  • Liaise with Clients and other professionals on projects

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of project engineering teams engaged on a wide range of different projects
  • Management of the Electrical team
  • Working with Mechanical Associate to organise delivery of design deliverables in accordance with programme
  • Responsible for delivering projects on fee budget and for identifying and agreeing additional fees for all additional works
  • Working closely with other company offices to balance workload and ensure consistent quality and standards across the business

Specific Activities

  • Attending client meetings
  • Obtaining client briefs and interpreting/confirming requirements
  • Lead project teams in the co-ordination and delivery of projects including attendance at meetings, internal programming, organising project reviews
  • Collaborative working through all stages of the design with other professionals
  • Writing technical reports and specifications
  • Manage electrical workload, to ensure staff are working effectively
  • Mentor junior electrical staff
  • Ensuring work is done to high quality, cost and accuracy
  • Understanding of company design software for design and specifications. Must have a working knowledge of AutoCAD, Amtech, Hevacomp and Microsoft Office suite. It would be advantageous to have experience with IES, BIM and Revit
  • Coordinating work with Mechanical engineers, architects and structural engineers
  • Undertaking feasibility studies, reporting findings
  • Carry out site surveys and reports, including:

- Acquisition surveys

- Schedules of dilapidations

- Produce record drawings

- Plant condition reports

- Energy surveys

  • Carry out site supervision including meetings and inspections
  • Attend meetings and play a proactive part. Record minutes/notes for external and internal use
  • Liaise with contractors on approvals and queries
  • Keep up-to-date with latest industry trends
  • Identify additional duties and fee requirements - negotiate with clients.
  • Assist with fee bids
  • Be responsible for project profitability including identifying, pricing and applying for additional fees
  • Undertake periodic project design reviews
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and registrations/QA/IIP/H&S etc
  • Contribute to Technical Excellence Group
  • Promote company Consultants to clients and other professionals.
  • Identify training requirements for staff and self
  • Ensure site risk assessments and CDM designer risk assessments are completed for all projects
  • Client relationship building
  • Managing a project team, including utilising planning software tools
  • Identify smarter ways to work
  • Good understanding of energy and environmental issues and solutions
  • Delivering projects within our resource allowance (hours to spend)
  • Working to project timescales and deadlines
  • Maintain high standards to ensure repeat business
  • Promoting the company health and safety requirements including toolbox talks
  • Undertake staff appraisals and identify training requirements
  • Report to ‘Head of Design’ on financial and technical matters
  • Resource planning for office in conjunction with mechanical associate, liaise with other offices as required to share resource
  • Chasing aged debts with client


  • Degree in M&E related subject
  • Member of CIBSE/IET(or other relevant Professional Institution)
  • Design software, IES, Hevacomp, Amtech, Dialux etc
  • CAD/Revit/MagiCAD software understanding
  • NBS specification writing
  • Smartsheet project planning
  • Understanding of Health & Safety and CDM regulations


  • Responsibility for the design deliverables
  • Manage projects using ‘smartsheet’ and similar software
  • Complete work in time frame and within budget
  • Identifying changes in brief and calculating and agreeing additional fees
  • Adding time to web time sheet entry on weekly basis, for staff and self
  • Producing expenses on a monthly basis, for staff and self
  • Ensuring staff are motivated and undertaking work to high standards
  • Checking work of staff, both technically, presentation and meeting client’s requirements.

  • Accountable for meeting project programmes and delivering profitable projects
  • Accountability for quality of electrical designs produced by electrical designers
  • Accountability for profitability of projects under their control
  • Work closely with the company’s other offices to balance workload and ensure consistence of quality across the business.
