IFIC Forensics is a market leading forensic investigation company, comprised of highly experienced investigators committed to delivering technical excellence.  Operating throughout the UK, Ireland and overseas, we investigate the origin and cause of fires and explosions and other accidents or failures on land and at sea.  Our clients trust us to respond rapidly and deliver conclusive reports, robust evidence and expert testimony of the highest technical standard in courts throughout the world.

In the context of forensic investigation, building services engineers use their knowledge of the design of mechanical and electrical systems, and experience of supervising the installation of such systems, to determine the origin and cause of incidents involving building services.  That may be in the context of an equipment failure, system failure, escape of fluid, fire or explosion.

A forensic investigation includes establishing the root cause of an event and determining the likelihood of a recovery from a third party or the repudiation of a claim on an insurance policy because the policyholder has failed to fulfil obligations under the contract of insurance.

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Building Services Investigator to join our highly qualified team.  This role will involve:

  • Attending scenes, documenting evidence, interviewing witnesses
  • Interrogating and downloading information from building management systems, intruder alarm panels, fire alarm panels and other automated control systems
  • Gathering evidence of how equipment works
  • Examining equipment recovered from scenes
  • Undertaking comparative examinations of damaged and undamaged equipment
  • Conducting root cause analysis
  • Report writing
  • Giving expert evidence in court

Candidates will be degree qualified in a building services, electrical or mechanical engineering discipline.  You should be a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer with CIBSE, IMechE or IEEE membership, or a Chartered Building Surveyor with professional membership of the RICS.

In addition, you will have first-hand experience or relevant extensive knowledge of the following:

  • Layouts and requirements for building services for residential or commercial properties
  • Installation of building services systems, e.g., mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection
  • Root cause analysis
  • Interviewing skills and recording evidence
  • Report writing
  • Giving evidence to tribunals of inquiry and in court

First-class communication skills are essential, along with the ability to present accurate information in a clear and unambiguous manner.  Attention to detail, a flexible approach and an ability to form effective working relationships with colleagues and clients are key qualities for this position.

This role requires frequent, often short notice, travel to scenes across the UK and Ireland.  Some overseas travel may also be required.  You must hold a current driving licence and, ideally, be a car owner. Relevant training in relation to fire investigation will be provided.
