Technical Director (Fire Engineering)

Our multinational engineering client is looking for an exceptional Technical Director to join their Fire Division in Manchester. This is a role for an established consultancy side fire engineering professional with an established
track record of leadership, technical design and business development.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:
Leadership:

  • Being part of the Fire Engineering Practice’s Leadership Team.
  • Shaping the Fire Engineering Practice’s technical direction of travel.
  • Overseeing technical consistency across the Fire Engineering Practice’s project teams and offices, as well as sharing best-practice approaches to ensure adequate technical rigour is applied.
  • Working with the Fire Engineering Practice’s Leadership Team to provide technical training for staff for their continued professional development.
  • Encourage and support staff membership of professional institutions, particularly the Institute of Fire Engineers.
  • Conducting technical interviews of potential candidates for the Fire Engineering Practice

Technical guidance and design:

  • Providing technical oversight for projects being delivered by the Fire Engineering Practice.
  • Leading design and construction due diligence reviews on behalf of the Firm relating to its investment portfolio.
  • Leading peer reviews of fire engineering works being delivered by other consultancies.
  • Leading Research and Development initiatives from raising funding applications through delivery, post-project completion, knowledge dissemination and implementation.

Business development:

  • Maintaining our links and fostering collaborative working relationships with academic institutions.
  • Representing the client at technical fire related external conferences and sitting on technical committees.
  • Raising the technical profile of the Fire Engineering Practice, internally and externally, e.g.through producing and supporting others in the preparation and publication of technical fire engineering journal papers.

Minimum Requirements:
You will good knowledge of design codes for common building types, such as those used for schools,
hospitals, stations, airports and residential projects.
You will also have excellent report-writing, communication and interpersonal skills, you will be a
Chartered Engineer with membership status or higher within the Institute of Fire Engineering. You
will have a strong understanding of the technical fundamentals of fire engineering, including most of
or all of the following:

  • Smoke control, heat transfer and fluid dynamics
  • Evacuation modelling
  • Computational fluid dynamic modelling using FDS
  • Risk assessment (qualitative and quantified)
  • A broad background and experience applying common UK guidance such as; Approved Document B, BS9999 and BS9991

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A clear work history and proof of professional development and learning
