Why are the founders of Facebook some of the wealthiest people in the world? Because they got in on the ground floor of something massive. If you work in the Data Centres sector (or even if you don’t), you probably have a good idea of why Facebook did so well. A company built on data, its rise coincides perfectly with the astronomical rise of the financial value of data, alongside that of course came the rise of physical data centre space.
I’m a recruiter for M&E building services design engineers. I’m not an expert in finance or investment by any means – the only advice I can offer you is “Invest in Facebook in 2004”, which I appreciate isn’t useful advice in 2019.
But the same “in on the ground floor” principle can also apply to decisions in your career, and if you are a design engineer that is something I know a bit more about. OK, I admit that moving job tomorrow isn’t likely to net you $70 billion (Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth) – but getting in at the start of a new team can have huge career benefits:
- More money
- More responsibility
- Learning and development
- Access to high up contacts within the client organisations
- An absolutely BANGING job on your CV!
- …I’m sure you can think of others yourself
If you’re sensible, right now you’ll be thinking there’s always risk to joining a start up – but here’s the thing: I’m not talking about a start up!
The company I am recruiting for is one of the biggest engineering firms in the world and have one of the biggest and most established MEP design teams around. They see what a huge growth area data centres is, so they are investing in it, they’ve taken on an expert to lead the team and they are now looking to build it up on both the mechanical and electrical sides.
So it’s the best of both worlds – in on the ground floor of a massive growth industry, in a team backed by all the money, support and expertise that comes with one of the global superstars of engineering.
