Junior/Intermediate Electrical Design Engineer – Bristol
3 reasons big corporate grad schemes are rubbish:
- A “one size fits all” approach to career development, leads to talented people getting left behind and all the same personalities becoming management
- Management level become full-time client meeting machines, while juniors sit at desks doing design. It takes ages for you to start taking on real responsibility
- All of this is built on the arrogance of the “Big Name” firms who neither know nor care about any other ways of doing things than their own
Of course this is simplistic, it won’t all be true everywhere. But if this strikes a chord with you, I’m recruiting for a junior/intermediate role with a company you’ll find very interesting.
It’s a small team in a medium-sized business, which means you work day-to-day with management, who are still proper engineers – directly involved in the projects, hands on and available to help you. You don’t need to go to the right social events to get them to notice you.
At the same time, they will give you responsibility as soon as they can because they don’t have time to do all the project management alone. They need you confident in front of clients ASAP, so you can take meetings on your own. They save time and stress, and you get exposed to valuable real world experience.
So how do they train you? Well it depends. There’s no roadmap. By exposing you to every aspect of the job and working alongside you, it’s a lot easier to identify your strengths and weaknesses and work on them. The workforce bring experience from firms all over the industry, big firms and small, and appreciate there are loads of different ways to engineer well. No one has all the answers.
I’m sure you’ll have more questions, especially if you’re bored in your current role and interested in a change of atmosphere, and/or a step up in exposure.
You probably don’t have an up to date CV, that’s no problem – first things first, let’s find out if this company suits you better than your current one, by giving John Sanger a call on 07814 619544.
