Client-side opportunity for a Design Manager to work for a global data centre provider.

Our client work on data centres across the globe and they have successfully forged an enviable reputation within the mission critical sector. Due to an impressive portfolio of work, and order book of projects they are looking to add a design manager from a building services background with previous data centre experience, and an individual who has worked on projects in Europe.

The Design Manager is responsible for the leading all aspects of the design of the data centre development project in Paris, France. The role is site-based and requires someone who is fluent in both French and English to work alongside the Project Manager. The candidate must have experience of successfully managing the design of data centre projects in France through all project stages.

The candidate must also have experience of working with UK / US based clients in France and have a full awareness of the differences in culture and expectations. A 'milestone driven' attitude and an in-depth understanding of French design standards and codes together with the legal, statutory and regulatory approvals required for the design, construction and operation of a data centre project in France is a must.

You will provide strategic and innovative thinking regarding the design and engineering of the Project and manage challenging deliverables against aggressive project expectations, within the budget and schedule objectives set for the Project.

THE ROLE:

  • The Design Manager will be responsible for directing and overseeing the day to day design activities of the various consultants (civil engineering, structural engineering, underground services, architecture, mechanical and electrical services, fire protection, BMS, security, connectivity, acoustics, Building Control, fire safety, health and safety, environmental, etc.), the contractors and vendors. This will include leading the consultant team before construction, supporting the tender and procurement process and providing design lead during construction and commissioning.
  • Apply Design & Engineering Guidelines / Standards to the Project to assure that standards are up to date with industry best practices and meet the Company's business objectives (emphasis on value-engineering and fast delivery).
  • Provide technical support to leasing and sale activities.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of budgets and forecasts related to anticipated design and construction expenditures.
  • Develop and maintain consultant, contractor and vendor relationships to provide cost effective services for projects.
  • Communicate status of the Project to both internal and external stakeholders on an adhoc and formal basis. Support the preparation of monthly project reports regarding the budget, schedule and scope objectives of the Projects.
  • Ensure safety is the top priority of all project members and adhere to local health and safety legislation.
  • Assume responsibility for design and project quality assurance
  • Serve as design liaison with managers of all company departments including executive management, operations, sales and finance.
  • Assist with preparation of the design / technical aspects of requests for proposals to contractors, consultants and vendors, including detailed evaluations and recommendations.
  • Brief and instruct the Project Team of their roles and responsibilities regarding design and engineering.
  • Monitor the Project Team in the performance of their design and engineering services.
  • Monitor the distribution of design information between the Project Team and between the Project Team and third parties.
  • Ensure all project scope and risk is managed through the approved change control and risk management process.
  • Assume responsibility for handover of a full set of accurate as-built drawings, testing and commissioning records and Operating & Maintenance Manuals to the operations team in a timely manner.

THE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluent in French and English both written and spoken. Bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in a multi-disciplinary design management role for technically complex projects.
  • Ability to understand and interpret design drawings, construction drawings, construction specifications, design and construction contracts, project schedules, and detailed budgets and estimate summaries.
  • Excellent understanding of advanced electrical, mechanical, security/monitoring, and fire detection/suppression systems. #
  • Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices in the design and construction data centre industry.
  • Good knowledge of design and construction terms and principles and contracts.

In-depth understanding of French design standards and codes together with the legal, statutory and regulatory approvals required for the design, construction and operation of a data centre project in France.
