Job Description

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to recruit a chartered lead engineer to provide leadership support in the field of Mechanical Building Services and HVAC. You will need to be able to work independently and as part of a team, have exceptional attention to detail and must be systematic in your approach. Your duties will also include coaching and mentoring junior engineers and taking ownership of their technical development. You will be responsible for establishing technical standards for Mechanical Building Services and HVAC installations. Building relationships and collaboration is critical for UKAEA, therefore the ideal candidate will need to be able to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, consulting widely to understand needs and capability requirements.

We are looking for an individual with excellent communication and problem solving attributes that can manage time effectively. If you possess building services design experience for complex commercial and industrial facilities, we would love to hear from you. 

What will you be responsible for?

  • Leading projects on major systems, from concept through to detailed design on enhancement programs for UKAEA facilities as well as for future fusion infrastructure.
  • Taking a lead in programmes involving critical plant with site-wide implications, such projects might be international/external.
  • Ensuring timely delivery of assigned projects within specification, and informing and controlling project budgets.
  • Setting the direction of site level jobs, acting as an authority and advisor for design solutions and/or critical plant operational issues.
  • Refusing actions in the interests of safety of personnel or asset protection on behalf of UKAEA.
  • Ensuring compliance within own team to management systems, policies and procedures.


Essential skills, experience and competence required

  • Chartered Engineer with a relevant professional institution
  • Building Services design experience for complex commercial and industrial facilities
  • Extensive understanding of applicable regulations and their impact on design, integration, and operation of Building Services systems (PSSR, Building Regulations, CE/UKCA)
  • Experience in the development and technical authoring of engineering specifications and standards
  • Experience in leading projects from concept design to final commissioning and integration
  • Experience of managing compliance for Mechanical Services (TM44, Gas, L8)
  • Engineering degree in Mechanical Building Services, HVAC, or a closely related subject with relevant experience to role

Desirable skills, experience and competence

  • Experience within the Nuclear sector
  • Experience within Property Management and/or Hard FM roles
  • Experience in estimating and preparing budgets for Building Services projects
  • BIM and soft landings knowledge
  • Experience in incorporating sustainability into Building Services design
