Building Decarbonisation & Skills Consultant

Transitioning to a low-carbon energy system to meet the 2050 net zero target is one of the most complex challenges we have ever faced.

One of the areas that must be addressed if we are to achieve the net zero target is the retrofit of the UK’s building stock , however there are significant barriers to achieving this at scale and the solutions to unblocking those are ultimately what we would like you to tackle.

In this role you will be pivotal in ensuring that the most impactful innovation priorities are identified , this will be underpinned by your ability to work with a broad range of external stakeholders & colleagues to define the content & requirements of innovative proposals and projects, build consortia, develop bid’s & kick off successful wins. On occasions you will be also responsible for the delivery of those projects.

Are you up for the challenge? this opportunity that will allow you to create something special with the potential to have a massive impact on the Energy Transition and the UK’s drive to hit Net Zero?

If the answer is Yes, then look no further you may have just discovered the opportunity you may not even have known you were looking for.

Look at the key challenges we would like you to tackle and facilitate impactful innovation in.

Challenge One: When it comes to the skills & training needed across the supply chain from manufacturers, designers, installers and associated advisory services, to ensure building decarbonisation makes a real positive impact to Net Zero, there are some big hurdles to overcome. The quantity of homes/buildings that need to be retrofitted is large, the timeline to do them in is short, and the lack of suitably qualified people to do the work is stark.  To this mix you can add a lack of a systems approach, customer input, technology integration and coordination between interested parties, all of which needs to be worked through to develop the skills, competencies, & quality & safety standards needed.

Challenge Two:  The reliance on digital tools & solutions to plan, design, install, maintain & optimize retrofit solutions is going to be hugely important, as such there is a need to understand the requirements of those tools & solutions, the technologies that will underpin them, how they can be developed, trialled, improved and rolled out.

You

In addressing those key challenges, we envisage that you will utilise your first-rate consultancy capabilities and knowledge of the commercial, funding, & technical factors of retrofit to engage credibly with a broad range of private, academic and public sector organizations.

The stakeholders will be looking to benefit in some significant way from the innovation projects you own and could be organisations that are either already offering product or services in this sector, or plan to and likewise those organizations who are likely going to be the key customers of those offering them.

Underpinned by realistic business models, your ability to understand a myriad of view’s, obstacles, priorities and opportunities whilst melding together coherent, innovation priorities will be key.

Next Step

So, if you would like to make a real difference, love a challenge, excited by the opportunity to do really worthwhile work & finally like the idea of working with a diverse group of people who are passionate about the decarbonisation challenge, you best apply.

During lockdown, we have been working remotely and as we begin to focus more on the future, we intend to embrace a new refreshing way to utilise our office in Birmingham City Centre. As a consequence we are developing a flexible approach to the workplace , which ensures we keep some of the benefits of home working whilst enabling the Catapult to operate efficiently, this hybrid way of working may result in the majority of us working from home for a good chunk of the time, merging the best bits of both office and home working.
