Sustainability manager - London (hybrid) - temporary job - 200-250 per day

Your new company

My client aims to be a net zero business by 2040 and has signed up science-based targets (SBTs to achieve this). They also has pledged (via by the Association of British Insurers' Climate Pledge) to reach net zero for direct emissions (scopes 1 and 2) by 2025.
This role supports these sustainability ambitions and initially is a three to six month contract to work with senior stakeholders to develop the sustainability strategy for our UK-based insurance businesses (UK Insurance).

Your new role

The majority of our CO2 footprint is from our indirect (scope 3 emissions), with the majority of these coming from our supply chain and our customers' healthcare claims. The strategy will need to set-out in detail our roadmap for reducing emissions from insurance claims, in line with the wider Bupa science-based targets. It also will need to capture the current work across BINS to reduce our scopes 1-2 (direct emissions) - note that this well work is well progressed therefore the role holder will need to ensure they engage with the sustainability team to ensure this is captured in the plan and then connected to the overall BINS sustainability agenda. The strategy also will need to address how we decarbonise other parts of our insurance business and we how we engage our people to ensure this happens.

-Coordinate the development of the Bupa Insurance (BINS) sustainability plan (including scopes 1-3), setting out actions across scopes 1-3 in both UK Insurance and Bupa Global to meet our ambition and targets. This will include the development of a paper for approval by the BINS Executive Committee and Board. The plan will need to support the wider Group and Bupa Global & UK sustainability strategy.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders and their teams, especially the Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Director and the UK Insurance General Manager for Operations & Healthcare Management
- Work with sustainability team to define baseline and primary drivers of carbon footprint across BINS and develop plan for overall reduction pathways, action plan and owners
- Work with climate change action working groups leads to understand, test and refine plans in order to meet BINS targets
- Healthcare providers: develop plan for engaging providers to reduce emissions, identifying priority areas and opportunities
- Digital products/care: plan for maximising our digital products (eg virtual GP) and encourage customer uptake so we can reduce emissions
- Digitising service: plan for paper reduction (letters, membership packs etc)
- Work with the CO2 reporting team in Finance on embedding and scope 3 measurement into existing business processes and ways to automate this
- Team education and engagement on building sustainability and CO2 reduction into ways of working, improving understanding of drivers of CO2 footprint and how to reduce this, creating an environment to share ideas.
- Connect sustainability agenda to BINS functional plans: promote reduction in use of paper, employee travel, marketing to customers etc) to drive local ownership and action

What you'll need to succeed

* Ideally significant experience in sustainability, especially working on and delivering carbon reduction strategies
* Ideally experience of working in and understanding of the insurance industry
* Significant experience working with senior stakeholders (CEO, Board and Director level) and highly experience at working in a matrix environment
* Confident communicator and influencer
* Comfortable working on own initiative
