We are looking for a confident and versatile engineer to join the Department for Education’s (DfE) Design Team, Technical Standards Division, Capital Directorate.

The Design Team’s Head of Energy, Environment and Engineering is responsible for setting the strategic direction for DfE’s energy resilience, sustainability and, engineering standards and specifications.

This role will report to the Head of Technical Development and includes both technical and policy responsibilities.

The purpose of this role is to lead Capital’s energy and environmental engineering response to the challenge of climate change in the education estate.

The Head of Energy will drive change in the key areas of sustainability, energy use on schools and colleges, and support the work to create healthy environments for all our building users. 

In leading this work, the successful candidate will be responsible for the ongoing development of the education estate energy strategy, the engineering specification for schools and colleges, and internal and external environmental specifications.

You will provide an innovative approach to both setting standards and collaborating across both Government and the construction sector to deliver successful forward-looking outcomes.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing new policy in the sector and will directly support the drafting of business cases and applications for large scale funding both within the team and across the department.

The successful candidate and their team will deliver detailed technical engineering support for new school and college buildings and will develop strategies in support of the existing school estate.

The successful candidate will be the Department’s subject matter expert and will lead assurance in all environmental and engineering standards.

You will need to lead your team to ensure that the Department’s standards are aligned with industry best practice to deliver reliability and resilience.

You will need to ensure that our standards will support the development of modern methods of construction and demonstrate that we will meet regulatory and compliance standards.
