We’ve recently created a new role for a Building Services Engineer to join our Estates Department. Supporting the Head of Estates, you will primarily be responsible for the provision of Mechanical & Electrical Building Services in the Laboratory and Research facilities, ensure services and maintenance activities are carried out in a safe and compliant manner as well as manage projects in related areas. You will also play a key role in the delivery of LSTM’s broader Sustainability Strategy and carbon reduction targets.

Key responsibilities will include:

Overseeing and ensuring the safe, compliant operation, maintenance, and monitoring of mechanical and electrical systems, while managing contractors, implementing energy conservation practices, and ensuring adherence to HSE guidelines and statutory requirements.

Conducting site inspections, ensuring maintenance and safety compliance, managing risk assessments, and overseeing responsive building services operations.

Managing small-scale projects and maintenance, supervising contractors, supporting lab systems, overseeing preventive maintenance, and ensuring compliance with regulations and standards within budget constraints.

Managing building services projects from inception to completion, with a focus on developing business cases for improvements, overseeing budgets, and analysing performance data, while advancing sustainability initiatives and energy efficiency towards Net Zero carbon emissions.

Keeping abreast of changes to legislation and amendments to approved codes of practice and introducing appropriate measure to ensure compliance and delivery of best practice.

Supporting the Head of Estates in budget planning and monitoring, identifying opportunities for service improvement, managing KPIs for building services, assisting with emergency maintenance and coordinating data reporting

The ideal candidate must possess:

BTEC, HNC or HND in Mechanical/Electrical Services/Building Services with post qualification experience.

Chartered engineer qualification (CIBSE - IEng) or working towards becoming Chartered.

Project management of building services projects from inception to completion.

Experience of providing building services functions within a specialized laboratory /research environment and familiar with CL3 facilities.

Thorough working knowledge of statutory regulations relating to specialist laboratory installations, plant and equipment, mechanical plant, pressure vessels, British Standards, IET Wiring Regulations, Legionella – Approved Code of Practice & Guidance L8, COSSH, Health & Safety at Work Act, and the CDM (Construction, Design and Management) regulations.

Excellent communication and influencing skills coupled with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Evidence of ability to react calmly in a crisis and to demonstrate persistence and robustness in the face of obstacles.
