Mechanical Design Engineer required for a manufacturer of different mechanical and electrical products based in Watford. This role is ideal for a candidate with a strong academic background in design and some practical experience. You will be instrumental in designing, developing, and refining mechanical systems and components across a variety of products. Collaboration with internal teams and customers will be essential, as you provide technical support and contribute to innovative research and development.
Mechanical Design Engineer Job Overview- Utilize 3D CAD software (SolidWorks) to model and design mechanical components and assemblies.
- Develop engineering drawings while applying Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and Design for Assembly (DfA) principles.
- Conduct CFD simulations using OpenFOAM to enhance product performance.
- Perform AC/DC simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics to analyze electrical components.
- Select appropriate materials based on technical specifications and performance requirements.
- Understand and apply various manufacturing processes to determine the most effective production method.
- Design for injection molding, considering key factors like draft angles and shrinkage.
- Engage in hands–on research and development, including product testing and working with lab tools.
- Utilize 3D printing for rapid prototyping and design validation.
- Document processes, create technical datasheets, and define product specifications.
- Design and build custom test rigs for product evaluation and development.
- Oversee mechanical engineering projects from initial concept through to final implementation.
- Offer technical support and provide accurate quotations to customers.
- Innovate and optimize production processes to enhance efficiency and quality.
- Work closely with customers and suppliers to diagnose and solve complex engineering challenges.
- Provide technical guidance to the sales team and external stakeholders.
- A Mechanical Engineering degree (or equivalent qualification).
- A basic understanding of electrical engineering (e.g., A–Level Physics or similar).
- Proficiency in 3D CAD design, particularly with SolidWorks.
- Ideally experience with CFD simulations using OpenFOAM.
- Ideally experience with AC/DC simulations, electrical discharge and CFD modules using COMSOL Multiphysics.
- Strong hands–on skills, with an interest in prototyping and product testing.
- Excellent problem–solving abilities and communication skills.
- A willingness to travel for occasional national or international events or product testing.
